Fireplace Safety

Property loss from fireplaces cost approximately $90 million annually, are a causal factor in over 30,000 fires per year.  To help readily avoid the potential hazards of using a fireplace, please review the basic safety guidelines below...

Installation & Maintenance

  • Always keep the damper open when in use.
  • Inspect and clean chimney regularly because creosote build-up can ignite your chimney....even the whole house.
  • Use a screen big enough to cover entire opening of fireplace.

Safety Tips

  • Keep children away from fireplace.
  • Don't wear loose-fitting clothes near the fire.
  • Use only metal containers when removing ashes.  Dispose of ashes outdoors, and confine them to a metal container.
  • Make sure the fire is completely out before leaving the house or going to bed.
  • Never burn trash, paper or green wood in your fireplace - these materials cause heavy creosote build-up and are difficult to control.
