Criminal Investigations Division

Investigations

There are four investigators and one Commander assigned to the Investigations unit. Their mission is to perform follow up on reports that the patrol officers make during each shift. The goal of the follow up is to assess each case and see if any law has been violated, and if so, to determine if an arrest can be made. Burglary, thefts, missing persons and sex offenses are the normal work load of the investigators. When they are caught up with all their assignments, they also patrol the Village to assist the patrol units as backups. The investigators are also the Department's primary juvenile offense officers. This function is to assure that the best interests of juvenile offenders and status offenders under the age of seventeen are maintained.

Tactical Unit

This specialized unit operates in plain clothes and their primary assignments are drug enforcement, gang activity and sexual-based offenses. These officers work with surrounding communities like Northlake, Melrose Park, and Stone Park, in addition to County, State and Federal law enforcement agencies.

Evidence Technicians

The Department has several Officers and staff per shift that have been trained by the State and certified as evidence technicians. The technicians request this assignment and go to class for state certification. Technicians collect evidence at crime scenes, and by doing this ourselves we avoid delays in having to call for another department or the State Police to do this work. We are self-contained for this work and have the necessary cameras and other collection equipment. We also enjoy having one of the few accident reconstruction technicians in the area in this unit that was certified through Northwestern University.
