Let's Move!

Let's Move!

Let’s Move! is a comprehensive initiative, launched by the First Lady, dedicated to solving the problem of obesity within a generation, so that children born today will grow up healthier and able to pursue their dreams. Sure, this is an ambitious goal. But with your help, we can do it.

Combining comprehensive strategies with common sense, Let’s Move! is about putting children on the path to a healthy future during their earliest months and years. Giving parents helpful information and fostering environments that support healthy choices. Providing healthier foods in our schools. Ensuring that every family has access to healthy, affordable food. And, helping children become more physically active.

Everyone has a role to play in reducing childhood obesity, including parents and caregivers, elected officials from all levels of government, schools, health care professionals, faith-based and community-based organizations, and private sector companies. Your involvement is key to ensuring a healthy future for our children.

The Current Situation

Over the past three decades, childhood obesity rates in America have tripled. Today, nearly 1 in 3 children in America is overweight or obese. One-third of all children born after the year 2000 will suffer from diabetes at some point in their lives, and many will face chronic obesity-related health problems such as heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, and asthma.

Illinois exceeds the national average - 34.9% of Illinois children are considered overweight or obese, ranking the state 4th in the nation in childhood obesity. According to the CDC, we spend about one out of every ten health care dollars on obesity and its complications. That’s nearly $150 BILLION spent each year to treat obesity-related conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure.

What We Are Doing

Let’s Move! Cities and Towns emphasizes the unique ability of communities to solve the challenge locally, and our Village leadership wants to bring our community together and spur action.

We participate by performing at least one significant action every twelve months in each of the four pillar areas:

  • Help Parents Make Healthy Family Choices
  • Create Healthy Schools
  • Promote Physical Activity
  • Provide Access to Healthy and Affordable Food

Franklin Park's Let's Move Community Group has made great strides in a few short months. The Park District expanded their Community Gardens and added a mini mile race for children during the Annual 5K Fun Run/Walk. The Village established a Farmers Market and worked on plans for Safe Routes to school. District 84 applied for a Safe Routes to School Walking School Bus grant and has plans for a school garden and gardening club. The schools continued their support for daily exercise for children. A local Scout, Joey Strzelecki, working on his Eagle project, developed two urban walking paths. The Library displayed books and developed a reading list for nutrition and exercise.
