Public Education

The Franklin Park Fire Department participates in several public education programs and public relations events each year. We begin each year with planning and meetings to discuss various projects and set up.

Some of our projects and community services the Fire Department participates in are:

  • CPR, AED, and First Aid Classes
  • Station Tours for Families, Girl & Boy Scout Troops & Day Camps, and schools
  • Fire Department Open House
  • Franklin Park Baseball Parade and Fall Fest Parade, as well as neighboring town parades
  • Delivering Santa-Christmas in Hammill Square
  • Fill the Boot Day for Burn Camp & Muscular Dystrophy
  • Fire Safety courses for all Schools and community groups

Through the support of Chief Stewart and our members, we are excited to move forward and constantly provide new programs within the village.  From the schools to the elderly, in house and with the park district, and including many new faces interested in public education and relations, we hope to provide the best level possible of fire and risk prevention education to the citizens and employees of Franklin Park.

The Command Staff (Fire Chief and Battalion Chiefs) strive to provide each member of the department the opportunity to reach not only the departments goals, but also the firefighter's own personal and professional goals.  Taken together, professional development and training are the cornerstone of an effective and well-managed fire service organization. To that end, our Department leads by example by not only hosting and teaching classes for our members, the Division, and offering courses to all outside agencies, but by our Command Staff attending courses at the highest level.  All Command Staff currently have obtained or are achieving the State certification of Chief Fire Officer, the highest level of Fire Service certification offered in the State of Illinois.

Are you confused with your child’s car seat? Are you confident it’s properly installed?

The Fire Department hosts periodic child safety seat inspections. To take advantage of these free car seat inspections, make an appointment today! Inspections only take about 30 minutes per car seat.

Some of our inspections goes over a twenty or so checkpoint list, which includes such items as:

  • Making sure the seat is the proper size for the child
  • Making sure the seat is facing in the correct direction and properly installed
  • Verifying operation of the new latch systems installed by car manufacturers after 2001
  • How to put a seat back together properly and safely, should yours be apart
  • The makes and models of seats that have a recall on them

We recommend that parents with child safety seats over ten years old dispose of them. Beware of purchasing seats at garage sales - your child is safer when you spend the extra money and purchase a new one. The NHTSA also recommends that if you are involved in an accident, even a minor fender bender, that the seat be disposed of and a new one purchased. This is because accidents can alter the fittings and construction of the seat. The alterations may not be visibly noticeable, but please don't take a chance on your most precious cargo.
